Hi I'm Nita. Welcome to Box & Burrow Vintage!

The shop specializes in crafting a thoughtfully chosen, quality selection of wares, from fashion and accessories to home decor and unique collectible items, in the vintage, antique, upcycled, handmade, and vintage-inspired categories. My aim is to offer my clientele a one-stop online shopping experience where the ability to build a look across a number of seasons or moods is both effortless and enjoyable.

To love vintage is to love items that gracefully show their age, imperfections, and all. If you’re a vintage lover, then you understand that it’s in the wear that an item builds its character, old-world charm, and, often, even its rarity. More often than not, these items require more care and attention to ensure their ongoing lifespan and value. Treat your vintage as you would your oldest and dearest friend.

An item is considered vintage if between 20-100 years old, while an antique item is known to be 100 years or older.

Items well-lived, with a life well-traveled.

I have been a collector and a bit of a rolling stone since I was just a young girl. I loved spending time quietly sorting through the catchall drawers in the kitchen, searching for treasures to tuck away into the keepsake boxes I had stashed in the back of my closet. Filled with everything from shimmering rhinestones that had fallen away from my hair brush to a Swiss Army multi-tool that managed to escape my father’s toolbox in the basement and sought refuge with the other lost items I was, so-called “keeping safe.”

In my early teens, I found myself drawn to the local thrift shops around town. Cultivating my collection of rebellious teenage fashion statements, one pair of combat boots at a time. I still remember the day I stumbled upon my first second-hand store, like a giant keepsake box that had come to life before my very eyes and on full display for all to see, filled to the tip with oddities in finds, fashions, and even the friends I made there. I was hooked immediately and spent the following years secretly fanning this flame.

As I grew, so did my wanderlust. By the time I was in my mid-teens, I had already ventured far beyond my bedroom walls. At 19, I made my way onto a Greyhound bus bound for New York City, with that old flame burning bright to light my way. In search of new experiences and old trinkets, this is when my true passion for vintage and fashion first began—combat boots by day, patent leather mary janes by night. There I was, wide-eyed and surrounded by life-sized catchall drawers, on nearly every street corner, and with little money to call my own, I was a kid in a candy store. A busted five-dollar silver and marcasite watch here, a dusty well-worn leather kiss-lock coin purse there. I loved them all. It wasn’t just the affordability that drew me in; it was the possibilities, the textures, the quirks, and even the smells, imperfectly perfect in so many ways. Treasures that all seemed to have a great story to tell and, much like me, had been and would continue, I hoped, to go places. I have always found a sense of romance in the process. There, hidden amongst those trinkets left as broken old memories, there was always that one that stood out from the rest, which seemed to speak only to me.

Having a nomadic heart makes you a pro at purging things you accumulate through various phases in your life. Selling what I had to get to the next new experience became second nature. I had always enjoyed the presentation aspect, the craft, and the shared experience of selling. Creating and dressing the stage for these cherished items before peeling back the curtain is a task I enjoy immensely, and seeing others’ reactions to things I had loved and had once created memories with is all part of the joy. In some ways, for the items I find, I’m just one part of a larger picture, a stepping stone on that never-ending journey toward finding that place of belonging.

In 2016, Box & Burrow Vintage was born.
This shop is my keepsake box brought to life and now on display for all to see and a love letter, you could say, to that day-dreaming and curious little girl I still want to be.

Inspirations

I have traveled extensively over the past 30 years, having visited over 50 countries across five continents. I have always found myself drawn to pieces that remind me of where I’ve been and of being a proud first-generation Vietnamese Canadian.

I am drawn to everything from the early 1900s to the 1990s, from refined runway to street couture, from Miliataria to unique upcycled handcrafted fashion.

The inspiration pool is wide, and my style continues to evolve. Still, beyond the shiny gems, the lace or frilly frocks, you’ll never see me far from a beat-up old pair of lace-up boots, a fitted black turtleneck, and worn out pair of dungarees or, as I like to call it, tactical treasure hunting attire.

Striving for gender fluidity

For me, fashion is a state of mind, not a position of gender. If the shoe fits, wear it. If it moves you, let it.
Create your next unique fashion statement by shopping the mixed-gender collections, in a range of sizes, from the above drop down menu or via the home page gallery icons.
We all deserve to be loved, and I hope there is something here to love for everyone.

  • BOXING + SHIPPING

The use of repurposed, recycled and sustainable materials is important to me. Sometimes this means what’s on the outside doesn’t always look so pretty, but I promise, it’s what’s inside that counts!

LOCAL pick up options are available upon request.

Processing your item for shipping can take between 1-5 days from your purchase to the time it hits the post. This gives me time to prep your item properly and do any additional cleaning or mending that may be needed before the item heads your way. I appreciate your patience.

NOTE: Please get in touch if an item requires a RUSH option or is a GIFT and needs any special attention. Special messages can be added to your parcel for the recipient.

  • TRIMMINGS

I like to use vintage fabric remnants when wrapping my items. For me, this is just another fun way to keep it eco-friendly.Most of these remnants are in excellent, repurposing condition. Reuse these pieces for your next gift-giving project or create something new! Here are some great repurposing projects you can try at home!

  • MENDING + UPCYCLING

I do my best to mend what I can. Although I focus on collecting items that are in excellent, gently worn, vintage condition, from time to time, a seam, lining, knit, or stitch has to be filled or fixed. To love vintage is to love all of the flaws and imperfections that go along with buying items that gracefully show their age which, for some, can even make them more collectible. I find great joy in this process and the creative side of upcycling existing well-worn pieces or creating entirely new pieces from vintage fabrics. These creative processes allow me to do my part in the sustainability side of vintage and breathe new life into items that would typically be discarded.

See the UPCYCLED Collection of the shop for pieces currently available.

Thank you.

Thank you for your follows and business through the years as I grew this very grassroots labor of love into what it is today. I have enjoyed cultivating a collection that inspires your own style while hopefully continuing to support the necessary process of repurposing and sustainability on our planet. Thanks for allowing me to learn and re-learn the ins and outs of making this a real “grown-up” business. I wouldn’t be here without you and will continue to work towards building a quality collection we can all re-love.
